As most of you know, I was supposed to start another round of chemo last week but was delayed because my counts weren’t where they needed to be. I have been to the doctor since and my counts are trending up so I’m on track to start my next round this Tuesday. Fingers crossed!
Having your health compromised will give you a new perspective, which can be a good or bad thing. For me it’s a good thing because when I’m feeling good and know a hospital stay is in my near future, every minute of every day out of the hospital is appreciated. That being said, here are a few of the things that I love right now.
This explains the title of the blog… Acai bowls have been all of the rage lately, at least is South Florida. So I was talking to my friend Lauren about how I mastered making the bowls at home and she asked why we never see the Acai berry in its natural state. For something supposedly so healthy, we only find it frozen or covered with dark chocolate (delish, btw). So where are the berries?!?! Upon doing a little research I have learned that Acai is a grape-like fruit that grow on a tree called Acai Palms which are native to Trindad and northern South America. I haven’t look too hard for them but they aren’t sold at Publix so I assume it’s either too expensive to ship them or they don’t stay fresh long enough to transport. Who knows. All I know is I’m in love with this breakfast treat. Here’s my take on the Acai Bowl using Sambazon Original Smoothie Packs – I found them at Publix in the frozen section by the frozen fruit/smoothie kits. It does come unsweetened.
- 1 Smoothie Pack – Blend with 1/4 cup water, 3/4 banana and I use a small handful of frozen fruit such as blueberries
- Top with granola and desired fresh fruit. I love pineapple, banana, kiwi, strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, etc. I like to add chia seeds for extra protein.
I was gifted dermalogica by my friend Sarah and I’m obsessed! I’ve tried almost every product under the ultracalming line and I couldn’t be happier! I’ve been blessed with fairly low maintenance skin but it can be oily yet dry at the same time and when it’s super humid my skin breaks out. Well dermalogica takes care of all of it! It is a little pricey but skincare is so important and a little goes a long way! Right now they have free shipping online or locally they carry the product at Ulta.
Game of Thrones
I know I’m late to the party but for anyone who hasn’t given this show a chance, do it! It’s on HBO and has all episodes on demand. I still have a hard time getting all of the characters names straight but it’s entertaining, nonetheless.
We recently got a Samsung Smart TV from Costco since a lightening strike zapped our TV, cable box and even my coffee maker. I definitely gave Will a hard time that it was ‘unnecessary’ but I retract that statement because it is awesome! Maybe it’s because I spend so much time at home nowadays but being able to access Netflix, Amazon Instant Video and Pandora is so convenient. If you’re in the market, look into it!
Blondie’s – Where the Girl’s Know Good Food
Located in Tequesta, Blondie’s is owned by two of my friends, Courtney and Meghan, and it is delicious!! They serve good American comfort food with a twist for breakfast, lunch and dinner and everything I’ve tried is soo good. My favorites are Dad’s Buffalo Chicken Salad with homemade ranch dressing, The Classic Burger which is served on a large English Muffin (I was hesitant but oh my it is good) and for something sweet you have to try a short stack of Beezy Cakes – chocolate chip pancakes that are to die for. You can thank me later. Menu, location and hours can be found here.
Fresh Air and Vitamin D
Since I’ve been given extra time at home while I’m feeling good, I’ve been able to be out and about a lot more than usual. Yesterday, I got to go out on the boat for a couple of hours with some great friends and quickly remembered how much I love the boat and where I live.
Even though it is already starting to feel like summer, AKA hot as balls, the sun on my face and breeze felt so amazing! I get about 30 minutes a day in the sun during my walks but it’s just not the same. Speaking of walks, the Rooney’s 5k run/walk that has been in Jupiter for years was moved to Palm Beach Kennel club in West Palm. To keep the original race alive, me and two girlfriends walked the 3 mile course ourselves! It’s the longest I’ve walked in a long time and we had a lot of fun. Nice getting strength back!
Last but certainly not least, I am loving crusaders for LLS like Valerie! If you don’t know her, you should. She puts on the Bachelor Auction for LLS and MS which raised $40k this year! I was lucky to be chosen as the Honored Hero as I am fighting leukemia and the event featured a ‘Kelly Cure Cocktail’ and the proceeds ($700!!!!) were given to me. Without people like Val who dedicates her time, energy and love to this cause, we wouldn’t have resources to find the treatments that can CURE patients. It’s a beautiful thing.
I’ve really enjoyed these last couple of weeks and am feeling refreshed and stronger… Ready to attack this next round. Since I’ll probably be in the hospital next week, I hope you all can enjoy my favorites for me!!
